Inspired by nostalgic childhood memories Michel re-calls re-enacting the classic black & white World War II films screened every Sunday afternoon on TV One, (the only channel at that time) and starring the likes of John Wayne, Richard Burton, Jon Voight, Robert Mitchum and others… Outside in the neighbourhood backyards ‘the boys would gather’ with their armies of plastic soldiers, inventively creating rifles and machine guns crafted from bits of wood found lying around with which to do battle. Cans of hairspray became ‘flame throwers’ and ‘tom thumb crackers’ were used as mock grenades and canon fire to cause playful mayhem… this was our version of PSP and X-Box.

Tuffery’s iconic Povi (bull) sculpture series are signature artwork pieces. A bull of tins, tinned beef, a major dietary staple for Pacific peoples – the simple pun almost denies the complexity of a sculpture imbued with the task of integrating social commentary with environmental critique. Tuffery’s bulls also provide wider context, questioning the knowledge discarded by the new economy the bull symbolised and voices the artists concerns on the impact of introduced species into fragile island eco-systems, an obvious metaphor for colonisation and change. Joint statement by Dr Karen Stevenson and Michel Tuffery.

Jem a young Tahitian lad was an important, though not widely known character in New Zealand history. Jem made his way to Australia and then New Zealand in the early 1800's where he married the daughter of a North Cape Maori chief and was involved in a number of major raids on the East Cape. Jem acted as a translator and negotiator between Maori and Pacific Islanders and their British Colonisers during this time and first meet Samuel Marsden 1809 in Parramatta, NSW. In 1814 Marsden returned to New Zealand, on meeting again Jem joined Marsden and returned to Parramatta where Marsden and other characters like McArthur had established a thriving agricultural base for Australian farming along side developing close linkages with New Zealands agricultural sector. Tuffery references these significant characters and historical relationships in this series of 'sheep knives' associating the knife to colonial settlement and cattle, sheep and harakeke (flax) industries.
