      Ula Tivaevae references Tuffery’s Cook Island and Tahitian family heritage and the uniqueness of Cook Island and Tahitian Tivaevae (Patchwork Quilting) introduced in the 19th century by the missionaries wife’s of the day. Tivaevae rapidly overtook the traditional use of Tapa cloth. Tuffery’s Tiare Maori (Gardenia Flower) and skulls lyrically reference past and present residue from first contact in the Cook Islands and Tahiti.

Tuffery is renowned as one of New Zealand’s finest printmakers having graduated from the School of Fine Arts Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin 1986 - 89 with Honours and was awarded the 1987 NZ Croda Award for Printmaking. His vision has been shaped from his research of past and present histories of Polynesia and his personal experiences with the Islands and their peoples. Tuffery’s powerful limited edition Woodblock, Silkscreen and Lithographic works on paper and Tapa cloth reveal his empathy with the indelible patterns and symbols of Siapo and Tatau.
