The Night Tui links with Tuffery’s Ngaio Tui series which he began in 2003 after returning from a project in Mysore, India, while there he visited a sanctuary for the sacred cattle and immediately made reference to the familiar environment of home, Aotearoa – New Zealand. Observing the successful urban breeding program initiated by Karori Sanctuary, Wellington for re-establishing endemic bird species such as Tui, Tieke (Saddleback) and Kereru alongside re-introducing native flora species. This series of paintings on Tapa cloth (made traditionally made from hand-beaten Mulberry tree bark) continues to subtly reflect his long held environmental concerns.

Ula for Kiribati expands on an iconic 1939 Pacific definitive stamp series which links to Tuffery’s 2009 Aotearoa graph stencil series of Silkscreen and Woodblock prints. There's small irony at play in the narrative as throughout the Pacific - Ula’s (Lei’s, floral necklaces) are ritualistically given to family members on their arrival and departure from the Islands and in more recent times it’s become a symbolic welcoming to tourists visiting these idealised islands in paradise. Ula for Kiribati is included in Tuffery's "Tangaroa's Garden" exhibition currently on at the Salamander Gallery, The Arts Centre, Christchurch - 12th to 31st October 2010.

Moa Oil Mt Taranaki
-
Medium:
Graph Stencil, Acrylic on Canvas -
Dimensions (mm):
Height. 1150 x Length. 760 -
Presentation:
Box Framed -
Status:
Original
-
Year:
2009 -
Tuffery frequently spent summer holidays in Taranaki and he witnessed, with much intrigue, the Māui project emerging off the New Plymouth coastline and the other Think Big projects. Alongside these Taranaki recollections in this art work are his childhood memories of the giant moa at the National Museum in Wellington. Michel’s moa tagged with the oil brand opens the debate on the dependence of an economy on a commodity with a doubtful future versus other more sustainable enterprises of the past. Economies lost and won. Joint Statement Bill Milbank and Michel Tuffery.
